A Guide to Artificial Turf Seasonal Maintenance

If you’ve decided on an artificial grass lawn, congratulations! You’ve made an eco-friendly, sustainable choice, and you’ll save money and effort on this low-maintenance option. Keeping an artificial turf lawn looking great for many years takes far less effort than caring for a natural lawn, but it still requires some attention on a regular basis. When the seasons change, it’s the perfect time to take some extra care, so that it always looks its best.

Natural vs Artificial: Maintenance for Different Lawns

When compared to a natural lawn, an artificial turf lawn is a breeze to maintain. There’s no mowing, there are no chemicals, and it doesn’t attract bugs or release allergens like pollen. While natural lawns need watering, seasonal treatments like aerating, and, of course, mowing, artificial lawns require only removing leaves and dirt and tending to the blades occasionally to keep them looking the way they should.

Turf Maintenance in Spring: Sprucing it Up

Natural lawns can be labor intensive in spring, but all an artificial lawn really needs is a little help after winter. During your spring cleaning, take some time to thoroughly clean your lawn and inspect it for any damage.

  • Blow away the dirt. A leaf blower is a great tool for cleaning debris like leaves and twigs from your lawn. If you prefer, you can opt to use a soft rake instead, but be careful not to damage the turf fibers.
  • Brush your lawn. This may seem like a strange thing to do, but fluffing your lawn up with a stiff bristled brush or a special turf brush periodically can keep your grass from matting, and lift high traffic areas.
  • Inspect the edges. Check all around the edges of your lawn, looking for anything loose or damaged. Sometimes, especially for turf around patios or pathways, shifts in the soil can cause the turf to move and become loose. While you are at it, make sure there are no weeds seizing the opportunity to sprout in the seams. If they are, consider an artificial turf-safe weed killer.
  • Spot treat for stains. It’s possible that you will notice some stains, whether from pet waste or just general wear. These can be easily cleaned with mild detergent and water. Be sure to rinse thoroughly, as soap buildup can actually attract dirt and cause further staining.

Summer Artificial Lawn Maintenance

Especially in places like Las Vegas, where the summer heat can be intense, it’s important to give the lawn some special attention, because high temperatures and increased foot traffic can be punishing for your artificial lawn.

  • Give it a regular rinse. In the hot, dry summer months, it’s easy for dust and pollen to build up on your turf. Rinsing it regularly can remove this, but don’t use a pressure washer, as this can degrade the backing of the turf.
  • Keep a watchful eye. High quality artificial grass is sturdy and UV resistant. Still, it’s good to inspect it regularly for any slight fading. It’s designed to weather the summer heat, but if there are too many reflective surfaces nearby, it may sustain minor damage. If this happens, consider doing something to filter the light, like using protective screens or blocking the light with planters.
  • Prevent high-traffic areas from flattening. This is easily accomplished with regular brushing.

Maintaining Your Artificial Grass in Autumn

As temperatures begin to be more temperate, it’s pleasant to spend time working on your lawn. It’s also smart to get the lawn ready for winter, by keeping it free from dirt and debris.

  • Mind the falling leaves. If leaves build up in your grass, they can block drainage, deteriorate, and cause mold and mildew. Regular leaf blowing can prevent this problem.
  • Make sure your drainage system is working correctly. Your artificial lawn’s drainage system is designed to keep water from pooling in your grass. In the fall, give it a onceover, making sure winter weather won’t cause a problem.
  • Spot clean and give it a brush. Staying on top of these minor chores will keep your lawn looking its best.

Winter Maintenance for Longevity

Las Vegas winters are mild, but they can still be rough on your turf.

  • Attend to it immediately after a storm. During a storm, debris is likely to collect on your lawn, and removing it promptly can prevent damage.
  • Tread lightly in frosty weather. When frost appears on your artificial grass, avoid walking on it, or at least minimize foot traffic. Artificial turf is durable, but the cold can compromise the fibers and heavy traffic might cause damage.
  • Keep up with brushing. Does this seem like familiar advice? All year long, the best way to keep your artificial lawn in good shape is to brush it and keep the blades of grass looking the way they should.
